Laptops donated overseas to equip Bible translators

Liberty students present laptops to workers in Cameroon.
Liberty University students on a short-term trip to Cameroon prepare to deliver 14 laptops to equip local Bible translators.

Through the Liberty University Center for Global Engagement, 16 laptop computers were donated last month to partner organizations serving overseas.

Liberty’s IT Inventory, managed by T.J. Layne, provided the computers, which had been retired from university use.

The laptops will be used primarily in Cameroon, where 14 were sent to Wycliffe Bible Translators at the Cameroon Association for Bible Translation and Literacy (CABTAL). Two were sent to help meet community needs in Ethiopia and Kosovo. All three countries were among the destinations of Global Teams last month, and the computers were delivered during the trips.

A Global Teams coordinator in the Center for Global Engagement helped initiate and facilitate the donations and coordinate the Cameroon trip.

“Cameroon is a strategic choice for a Liberty team because it offers a rustic, African living experience combined with a real-time look into Bible translation,” the coordinator said. “It was probably the most challenging and demanding of all our Global Teams this year, but we know that through their efforts, Wycliffe and CABTAL are fulfilling a crucial role.”

In Ethiopia the computer will help workers operating a sports camp.

The laptop donated to Kosovo will be used for research and teaching in a school library that had been destroyed in a war. During Liberty’s recent trip, students helped rebuild the school and donated money to help buy books for the library.

Global Teams are sent out during school breaks through Liberty’s Center for Global Engagement. The center provides a number of resources for global awareness and ways for students to get involved, including global internships and academic programs, such as a major or minor in Global Studies.
