Cyber Defense Club places second in regional competition

Liberty University's Cyber Defense Club

Liberty University’s Cyber Defense Club had another great semester of competition after claiming the top three spots in the National Cyber League’s Gold Bracket in 2013. The team placed second during its first trip to the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition on March 26-29. The club is housed in Liberty’s School of Engineering & Computational Sciences.

The students were required to manage a set of computer systems and keep them running while battling against professional hackers and a bombardment of business tasks.

The Flames ranked in the top eight of 32 teams during the qualifying round March 4, and met again at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Md., for the two-day regional final where Liberty finished second behind Towson University. While Liberty’s team was comprised of only undergraduate students, the competition allows for two graduate students per team, making the Flames’ success even more impressive.

“All the hard work that the team put in preparing for the competition paid off,” said Dr. Mark Shaneck, associate professor of computer science and the club’s mentor. “They were able to accomplish something great while at the same time gaining valuable experience for their future careers as they went head to head against the leading universities in the cyber security field, as well as against highly skilled and accomplished penetration testers.”
