FACS department goes ‘green’ and ‘glam’

Every year, Liberty University’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) puts on a fashion show, giving design students the opportunity to showcase their creativity and raise money for a charity. This year’s eighth annual show, “Go Green, Go Glam,” presents a new challenge for the students, requiring them to create each design with recycled materials. The event is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in the Schilling Center.

“This theme encompasses the whole idea of being stewards of what we already have, instead of always going out and looking for something new,” said senior Kristen Goodrich, Fashion Show director.

Student designers must incorporate at least 60 percent reused materials in their outfits.

Go Green, Go Glam’ Fashion Show

Saturday, April 12, 8 p.m.

  • $7 in advance
  • $9 at the door
  • $10 for VIP

Tickets are available for purchase online or at the Vines Center Box Office.

In addition to a focus on caring for the environment, the fashion show also acts as an avenue for students to use their skills for the betterment of their communities. Proceeds from this year’s show will go to support Channel Initiative, a charity whose aim is to build hope for underserved women and children in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo.

FACS students have also been involved in sewing products for Channel Initiative’s health care efforts.

Past fashion shows have supported charities such as Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center, Liberty Godparent Home, Freedom 4/24, and Threads of Hope, Inc.

“The students are very excited about the new charity we’ve chosen this year, because they know that the ticket sales will be able to help people that they would not have been able to help themselves,” said Matalie Howard, faculty advisor for the fashion show and assistant professor in the FACS department. “It’s great for our students to feel like they can take fashion creativity and really help people around the world.”

  • Liberty University’s FACS Department seeks to help students learn the values, knowledge, and skills necessary to be proactive in strengthening the contemporary family. Graduates from this program enter a variety of fields, including interior design, human development, food and nutrition, and clothing.
