Liberty ranked fifth on list of nation’s 20 best conservative colleges

Founded in 1971, Liberty University has remained true to its conservative mission of Training Champions for Christ.

Liberty University, the largest private, nonprofit four-year college in the country and the largest Christian university in the world, was recently ranked No. 5 on a list of the 20 Best Conservative Colleges in America compiled by TheBestSchools.org.

The study rated colleges and universities that adhere to conservative values, providing a counterbalance to the progressivism and liberalism that pervade higher education in the United States. Some, such as top-ranked Hillsdale (Mich.) College, are secular in their means of educating students. Others, including No. 3 Biola (Calif.) University, Liberty, which has as its mission Training Champions for Christ, and No. 8 Regent University, are boldly Christian in their approach.

An emphasis was placed on schools that seriously pursue their primary mission of maintaining rigorous academic standards and inspiring students’ moral character, civic virtues, and fiscal responsibility, all trademarks of conservatism.

Additional factors the poll considered were how welcoming schools are to students raised with traditional moral values and how much they embrace conservative ethics in their curriculum and student life.

Liberty’s educational philosophy is to foster a Christian academic community in the tradition of evangelical institutions of higher education. President Jerry Falwell said the university is one of the few in the nation that have remained true to their calling.

“Many universities abandoned their original Christian mission when they achieved academic and athletic prominence,” he said. “Often, the founding principal was compromised because of financial needs and pressure from donors who did not share the founding values of the institution.”

Falwell has furthered the vision of his father, Liberty founder Dr. Jerry Falwell, perpetuating the university’s philosophy of developing Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential to impact the world. Through its residential and online programs, Liberty equips men and women to make invaluable contributions to their workplaces and communities, follow their chosen vocations as callings to glorify God, and fulfill the Great Commission.

“Everybody said a conservative Christian school could not survive, but we did,” Falwell said. “We’re determined that Liberty is going to be the first university to become world-class in every way while staying true to our mission.”
