Hunger Banquet raises awareness of poverty around the world

Liberty University’s Student Government Association (SGA) partnered with Sodexo, the university’s dining services provider, to host the Hunger Banquet on Friday, Feb. 18, in the Schilling Center. About $600 was raised, with proceeds going to support the Liberty University Campus Garden and a missions group serving in Eastern Europe.

Participants bought tickets for the banquet, not knowing until they arrived if they would be served a meal of rice and water, a meal of rice, water, and beans, or a fully catered meal.

SGA President Joshua Warner said the meals were based on real poverty data.

“Our hope was to raise awareness on the issue of poverty, and to spark interests in the student body.  Hopefully someone walked away from the event with a mindset to change the world for good,” he said.

Casey Guise, marketing coordinator for Sodexo, explains the event to participants.

Casey Guise, marketing coordinator for Sodexo, said his team was proud to sponsor an event that recognizes the need to stop hunger around the world.

“This banquet is an illustration about the difference between the fortunate people in our society and those who are less fortunate,” Guise said. “The community at Liberty is open to hearing about this and open to being involved, and that is fantastic.”

Warner said it was an opportunity for students to show they care about others.

“As a student, I am excited to see Liberty getting involved with fighting poverty and taking care of God’s creation,” he said. “We are all His children, and it is our job to make sure we take good care of what He has given us. We can do this by helping those who have less.”
