Americans for Prosperity president addresses government students

Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity (AFP), spoke to Liberty University students about the importance of winning on behalf of principles during a Helms School of Government convocation held on Friday, Oct. 25.

Phillips, a political veteran of 28 years, has worked on presidential, gubernatorial, and state campaigns. He also served four years as chief of staff for Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va., 6th District) before becoming the president of AFP.

AFP is a grassroots organization dedicated to educating American citizens on economic policy. There are 34 state chapters with more than 2.3 million members.

Phillips told students that Christians should not settle for just having principles alone. He urged them to stand up for what they believe and continue to win the battles for those beliefs. He told them to realize they will face confrontation, but to commit to their values through the trials.

Phillips said when many politicians run for office, they will say that whether they win or lose, they are standing on their principles. He said students should learn now to take pride in their principles, but always set their sights on the end result.

“Focus on outcomes and not your job description,” Phillips said.

He voiced the importance of Liberty’s presence in Washington, D.C., and asked current students to strive to be like those who came before them.

“The Helms School of Government has a great reputation,” Phillips said. “Your predecessors, who have come from this university, are already making a dramatic difference.”

Today’s speech was not the first time Phillips had the opportunity to visit Liberty. As a Liberty parent, he has visited his twin sons, Cabot and Hudson, current Liberty students, and his eldest son, Barrett, who graduated in May.

Phillips’ visit on Friday was preceded by Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng’s visit to the Helms School of Government on Wednesday and will be followed by a visit from Pennsylvania representative and Liberty alumnus Rep. Timothy Krieger on Oct. 29.

“One of the touchstones of the Helms School of Government is that our students get the opportunity to meet people who are doing real things in the real world,” said Shawn Akers, dean of the Helms School of Government.
