Noted author and speaker John Maxwell addresses Friday convocation

Leadership expert Dr. John Maxwell spends much of his time speaking to managers of Fortune 500 companies, but on Friday he offered valuable life lessons to thousands of college students at Liberty University’s Vines Center.

“You can overcome the limitations that others place on you,” he told them.

Using the biblical example of David, Maxwell noted that the shepherd boy was not viewed by others as a leader. By trusting in God, David overcame the literal and figurative giants he encountered throughout his life.

Maxwell then encouraged students to “serve others with a generous spirit” by verbally painting the picture of Rebekah giving water to Abraham’s servant and his 10 camels (Genesis 24). With this example, he pointed out that people often go through life unwilling to serve others, instead wondering what they can achieve for themselves.

“We live in an age where people say ‘I don’t do windows,’” Maxwell said. “I’m glad Jesus didn’t say, ‘I don’t do crosses.’”

Toward the end of his message, Maxwell challenged students to manage their lives one day at a time as the prophet Daniel did. Daniel faithfully followed God’s instructions daily, focusing on the situation before him rather than on the future.

“The secret to success is determined by your daily agenda,” he told the students. “I think at your age it is so easy to overestimate tomorrow and underestimate today.”
