Liberty University’s extensive trail system played host to its first ever mountain bike race on Saturday: Assault on Liberty Mountain. The event consisted of 125 bikers divided into three categories with skill levels ranging from expert to novice.

Students who enjoy music and fellowship in a coffeehouse-style setting now have a new hangout spot on Campus North, with the opening of Liberty’s Tilley Student Center. The center is located next to the recently renamed LaHaye Student Union, which encompasses the new student center and campus recreational facilities.

During the weekly residence hall meetings, Resident Assistants handed out voter registration forms and coached students on how to fill them out. The forms were turned in to the Office of Student Leadership, allowing the students a hassle-free way of registering and avoiding the cost of postage.

Liberty University’s Office of Promotional Publications is sponsoring LU Model today and Thursday, to sign up any students, faculty and staff who are willing to be “the new faces of Liberty” by participating in university photo shoots throughout the year.

Liberty University’s Student Activities Office aims to give students the “ultimate” college experience by offering both on-campus events and trips. “Ultimate LU,” an initiative started this year, involves getting more students active in recreation and fellowship opportunities.

Liberty University now has 10,500 students who are eligible to vote. If they register locally, those numbers could make a big difference this November, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said at Wednesday’s convocation in the Vines Center. “Wouldn’t it be something if Liberty votes were enough to change which presidential candidate won Virginia and maybe even the presidency itself?” he said.

Liberty’s throng of freshmen assembled at Williams Stadium Thursday evening for the inaugural Chancellor’s Cookout. Hosted by LU’s Athletics Department and the Center for Academic Support and Advising Services (CASAS), the new university tradition introduced incoming students to a multitude of stadium cheers, igniting school spirit days before the start of the 2008-09 academic year.

Liberty Home Bible Institute, the world’s largest correspondence diploma program on the Bible, has announced its 100,000th student.
On Aug. 11, Jeremy Miller of Jefferson, N.C., joined thousands of other students from 50 states and 38 countries who have been enrolled in the 32-year-old certificate program of Liberty University.

Members of The Spirit of the Mountain Marching Band are in Band Camp this week, preparing for the upcoming football season, which kicks off Aug. 30 at Williams Stadium. The band is practicing for its halftime show, "DIRECTOR'S CUT: Music from the Movies," an original marching show with songs from favorite cinematic adventures and movie scores, including Batman, Top Gun, James Bond, Mission Impossible, and others.

The Student Activities Office has announced that Michael Tait, a popular Christian singer and LU alumnus, will perform at this year’s Homecoming on Oct. 25. Tait, along with his band by the same name, will do a 15-minute halftime show and a 45-minute concert after the game.

Fall semester classes may not start for two weeks, but already resident assistants are preparing to meet their students’ needs.
Under the Office of Student Leadership, resident assistants (or RAs) are responsible for pastoral-like leadership for the dorms in the areas of discipline, discipleship and general oversight of residential students.
