LaHaye Ice Center to host Christmas show

For the last five years, Liberty University’s LaHaye Ice Center has drawn large crowds for a seasonal favorite: the Christmas on Ice show, featuring local talent, including Liberty’s synchronized skating team.

This year’s show, “A Storybook Christmas,” will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. The event is hosted by the Lynchburg Figure Skating Club and features performances by members at all skill levels, from age 7 to 49, including competitive skaters and an Olympic hopeful.

The show will bring traditional stories to life on the ice, said Yvonne Nelson-Reid, director of the Lynchburg Figure Skating Club.

“The Christmas on Ice show is a wonderful celebration of the spirit of Christmas and a tradition now shared by many Lynchburg families,” she said. “There is nothing like enjoying a cup of hot chocolate, fabulous music and talented ice skaters to get you in the Christmas spirit.”

Since it opened in 2006, the LaHaye Ice Center has increased the popularity of skating on Liberty’s campus and in the community. The center offers public skate sessions, lessons and a chance to watch Liberty’s hockey teams compete against some of the top in the nation. The center is home to several Liberty club sports teams: five men’s and women’s hockey teams, a men’s and women’s figure skating team and the women’s synchronized skating team. The rink is also used for the popular intramural sport of broomball.

“The donation of the Ice Center by Tim LaHaye to Liberty University has been such a wonderful gift to the community,” said Nelson-Reid.

She said the club is honoring this by offering free admission to the Christmas show for all Liberty students.

General admission is $10 in advance. Purchase tickets online or at the LaHaye Ice Center Box Office. (A free ticket will be given for every 10 tickets purchased if bought from a Lynchburg Figure Skating Club member or at the LaHaye Ice Center on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 6:15-8:15 p.m.) Tickets are $12 at the door. The club is accepting donations of gloves and canned food at the event.
