Avery Warley plays for USA Basketball

Liberty University redshirt senior center Avery Warley had a dream come true when she was selected to the 2011 USA Basketball Pan American Games Team, which competed Oct. 21-25 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Warley is the third Liberty player to gain USA Basketball experience. Megan Frazee, a 2009 graduate, participated in the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Trials in 2007. Additionally, 2005 graduate Katie (Feenstra) Mattera was a part of the 2007-08 USA Basketball Women’s National Team roster. Mattera played for the silver-medal-winning USA Select team in the FIBA World League Tournament in 2007.

The Pan American Games are a multi-sport competition held every four years in the year preceding the Olympics. Organized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), the Games are open to men and women representing countries from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.

Warley finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds, helping Team USA go 2-2 and place seventh overall.

The Washington, D.C., native enjoyed a stellar 2010-11 season, garnering numerous awards. She was the Big South Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a first team All-Big South and VaSID All-State honoree.
