Block Party succeeds in getting students engaged in campus activities

A Colony House concert, zero-gravity spin ride, and magic show were a sampling of the attractions thousands of returning and incoming students enjoyed at Liberty University’s annual Block Party, on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Sponsored and set up by Liberty’s Student Activities department in the parking lot between the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center and the LaHaye Ice Center, Block Party offers a free night of music, carnival-styled food and fun, as well as opportunities to build friendships and join student clubs and organizations.

According to Naomi Bower, the staff’s marketing lead, the Block Party is a staple event for Student Activities and was one of the best-attended to date.

“We saw over 9,000 visitors this year, which exceeded our expectations,” she said. “Block Party shows students the opportunities they might not have known about before, especially for freshmen who are just getting here and learning about Liberty.”

The Student Government Association presented a variety of tables and booths set up by many of the more than 100 clubs on campus, plus many of the 40 programs in Liberty’s Club Sports department.

The Block Party kicks off a year’s worth of fun and entertainment and hundreds of events planned by Student Activities, including Open Mic nights at the LaHaye Event Space and Argo Tea Cafe, a laser tag tournament (Sept. 6 at the Liberty Paintball Fields), and concerts from artists such as Andy Mineo (Sept. 13), Tenth Avenue North (Sept. 27), and Rend Collective (Nov. 9) in the Vines Center.

The next event on the calendar is Saturday’s outdoor movie night showing of “Avengers: End Game” starting at 10 p.m. after the Flames Football team kicks off its 2019 season against Syracuse at 6 p.m. at Williams Stadium.
