Winterfest music festival brings exciting worship, uplifting messages

Tickets to Liberty University’s Winterfest, set for Dec. 30-31, are on many Christmas wish lists this year, with people of all ages ready to ring in the new year at the largest Christian New Year’s Eve festival on the East Coast.

This year’s event will bring two of the best performers in any music genre to the stage: TobyMac, who will headline opening night, and Skillet, which will take guests into the new year with its signature high-energy show punctuated by fireworks.

“Bringing in Skillet and TobyMac on the same bill is really incredible,” said Cort Comfort, Liberty’s assistant director of strategic partnerships. “TobyMac, a 1988 Liberty alumnus, hasn’t been to Winterfest since 2012, so we are really excited to have him back at his alma mater. He is a phenomenal showman; there’s not a show he does that’s not exciting to watch. And I don’t know that anyone has a pyrotechnic show quite like Skillet. From the moment they get on stage to the moment they get off, it’s just pure adrenaline.”

Ticketholders will also hear from the artists during Q & A sessions prior to each of their performances.

Other onstage acts will offer a diverse sampling of music, from powerful praise and worship and pop acoustic to hip-hop and heavy metal. The Liberty Worship Collective, Social Club Misfits, and FF5 will perform on the first night. Humble Tip, KB, and I Am They will take the stage on New Year’s Eve. Guests will also be thrilled by a BMX stunt team and Lady Houdini, one of the premier escape artists in the country.

Liberty is offering a bundle ticket package this year that includes nearby hotel accommodations, meals, and concert tickets. Use the promo code “Jingle” to receive one free all-event pass with the purchase of three passes.

But more than just entertaining the crowd, Winterfest’s focus will be on witnessing to and discipling the more than 7,000 expected guests. Throughout the event, passionate speakers will bring spiritual encouragement each night. Liberty professors and special guests will also offer breakout sessions for youth groups and their leaders.

“We are not going to forget Who our Creator is,” Comfort said. “The entire event is built around challenging the audience to answer the question of how they are going to change the world for Christ in 2019.”

Liberty alumnus Rick Gage (’98), who served as an assistant coach for Flames Football from 1984-85 and founded Go Tell Ministries, will exhort the crowd with a powerful message on the first night. Brody Holloway, a pastor and director of Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters, a high-adventure camp in North Carolina, will be the primary speaker on New Year’s Eve.

“Brody Holloway is such an inspiration, and I think very few people understand youth as much as he does,” Comfort said.

Holloway and Liberty School of Divinity Professor Dr. David Wheeler will also facilitate student sessions while Dr. Richard Brown leads in-depth, engaging youth leader sessions.

“Youth leaders will receive excellent training from influential professors and accredited instructors who do this professionally,” Comfort said. “It’s not just a coffee, lunch, and social; they will actually be fed and taught and loved on while their students are next door getting a similar message.”

Guests with all-event tickets can also make memories with friends and family during the day at Liberty’s world-class recreational venues before strolling along an illuminated University Boulevard to the Vines Center, site of all of the evening activities.

“The Christmas season is such a beautiful time to be on Liberty’s campus,” Comfort said. “With our residential students away on break, Winterfest guests really get the campus to themselves.”

The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre will be open for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Guests can skateboard at the Liberty Mountain Skate Park, ice skate at the LaHaye Ice Center, bowl at the Montview Bowling Alley, and go rock climbing, swimming, and play basketball and volleyball at the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center or soccer at the Thomas Indoor Soccer Center.
