Jim Cymbala speaks at Good Friday convocation

Jim Cymbala, senior pastor of the 10,000-member Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York and a bestselling author, delivered a Good Friday message to Liberty University students at Friday’s convocation.

Reading from Mark 15, he focused on the three sins he said put Jesus on the cross: compromise, envy and apathy.

Compromise can lead to consistent sin, he said, and apathy can cause blessings in Christian lives to become more like curses if we put the blessings before our relationship with Him.

Cymbala also spoke about “leaven,” or unresolved sin that can keep us from experiencing the joy of a Christian life, and about the meaning of Passover today.

“Jesus is not only the blood found in the lamb, He’s the helper, the only one that can shine His light and help us to get rid of the junk that’s in our lives — I need him every day to save me from the junk that wants to accumulate in my life, which will dishonor Him and which will take away the joy of His salvation,” he said.

Cymbala, a regular speaker at Liberty’s convocation, has led the Brooklyn Tabernacle for 40 years. His wife, Carol, is the director of the Grammy-award winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. The church started as a small congregation in downtown Brooklyn, with less than 30 members and a mission to reach out to people of all ages and ethnicities. Brooklyn Tabernacle now draws a diverse congregation and has planted six “daughter churches” throughout the New York City metro area – in addition to missionary stations overseas in several countries including Haiti, Israel, Peru and the Dominican Republic.
