Liberty team returns from Carolinas following hurricane relief efforts

A team of 14 Liberty University students and staff returned from Jacksonville, N.C., this week after assisting Samaritan’s Purse in relief efforts following Hurricane Florence.

The team was part of LU Send Now, the university’s disaster response initiative.

While in North Carolina, the team cleared trees from yards and gutted homes destroyed by intense flooding. North Carolina was heavily impacted by the hurricane.

“It was worse than I had imagined,” said Liberty junior Abby McDonough. “There was still a lot of flooding. It rained one day while we were there, and it started flooding more because the ground was already so saturated with water.”

Senior Austin Wetzel said the team worked to minister to homeowners throughout the six-day trip.

“The people who were going through such hard times were all at different places,” Wetzel said. “But as a team, it was cool to see the different skills and abilities everyone had to minister to different types of people. It was cool how God brought us people who someone from our team was able to relate to in a unique way.”

Last month, LU Send Now also dispatched a team of four to Redding, Calif., to respond to the Carr Fire, which displaced more than 300,000 residents.

Over the past academic year, teams have been dispatched for relief work in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria’s devastation as well as to other areas affected by deadly hurricanes, including Texas and the Caribbean. Liberty recently provided shelter and supplies locally to flood victims.
