Paintball team brings home national title

Liberty University’s Class A paintball team advanced to its first National Collegiate Paintball Association (NCPA) championship match by edging Florida Atlantic University, 5-4, in Sunday morning’s semifinals and dethroning the University of Central Florida, 8-1, in Sunday afternoon’s final in Kissimmee, Fla.

“It was definitely the highlight of everyone’s career here so far,” Flames Head Coach Brian Davidson said. “We have been a contender for almost 10 years now, so it’s been a long time coming. We put it in God’s hands this weekend and used our platform to be a witness for Him. To win wasn’t our sole purpose; it was to share Jesus with these guys, praying with them after matches and just being an example for Him.”

Liberty’s five-man starting Gold line, led by graduates David Dickerson and championship match MVP Christian Campbell.

The Flames placed third or fourth in four of the past seven national championships.

“This first title proves that all of our hard work and effort finally paid off,” Davidson said.

Florida Atlantic eliminated Liberty in the semifinal round last year, but the Flames won their rematch with FAU in Sunday’s semifinals.

“It’s always fun to play the Florida teams because they’re generally the top tier and the ones going after us,” Flames freshman Corbin Ryan said. “Since this is my first nationals with the team, it is an unbelievable feeling.”
