Flames pitcher Evans picked by Oakland A’s in Major League Baseball Draft

The Oakland Athletics selected Liberty University right-handed pitcher Caleb Evans on Wednesday’s final day of the 2017 Major League Baseball (MLB) First Year Player Draft.

The Smith Island, Md., native is the 64th player picked in the MLB Draft during the 44-year history of the Flames’ program, which has now had at least one player chosen in each draft since 2000.

Evans, who was selected in the 32nd round, becomes the third Liberty player drafted by the A’s, following fellow pitchers Dan Valentin in 2000 and Jared Lyons in 2015.

After pitching solely in relief during his first three seasons, Evans was a starter for the Flames as a senior this spring. He finished with a 5-4 record and a 4.10 ERA over 68 innings, striking out 57 and walking 33 in 15 appearances.
