Flames sophomore to race in Friday’s NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Liberty University sophomore distance runner Azaria Kirwa will be the first Flames contestant in the men’s 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships since fellow Kenyan Sam Chelanga won the 5K national title in 2011. He will also be the first Liberty men’s athlete to qualify for outdoor nationals in any event since 2013.

Kirwa narrowly missed qualifying for nationals in the 10K at the NCAA Division I East Preliminaries on May 25 in Lexington, Ky., before earning the fifth and final automatic berth in the 5K with a time of 14 minutes, 7.38 seconds on May 27.

He will compete in Friday night’s national 5K final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., set to start at 10:25 p.m. (EST).
