Students celebrate 2000s nostalgia at Spring Coffeehouse

Students packed into the Liberty University Vines Center late Saturday night for Spring Coffeehouse, which celebrated icons and pop culture of the 2000s.

Sponsored by Student Activities, Coffeehouse is a late-night entertainment event held twice a year — in the spring and just before Christmas break — showcasing student talent in music, dance, and video production. Now in its 24th year, Coffeehouse is one of the longest-standing traditions at Liberty and draws some of the largest crowds.

Auditions are held for each Coffeehouse. On Saturday, 15 acts and six student-made videos debuted.

“The performers and videos for the show are terrific,” said Erin Diaz, event coordinator. “I would argue to say it was one of the best lineups I’ve seen in the past five years.”

Visitors to Coffeehouse were greeted with large cutouts and props on the concourse level, inspired by television and films of the decade, including “Finding Nemo,” “Shrek,” and “Harry Potter.” To get in the spirit, some wore outfits reminiscent of the time or even dressed as popular characters from the decade, including Napoleon Dynamite, The Incredibles, and Ron Burgundy from “Anchorman.”

Throughout the night, talented student musicians brought the previous decade to life with covers of 2000s hits, including “Move Along” by The All-American Rejects, “Halo” by Beyoncé, “Haven’t Met You Yet” by Michael Bublé, and “Burning Up” by the Jonas Brothers.

D-Trex, a student-led hip-hop dance ministry, showcased their athletic break-dance style to the tunes of Snoop Dogg, Destiny’s Child, Nelly, and more.

Video put a Liberty spin on some popular television shows of the last decade. One parody video, “The Dorm,” reimagined residence hall life through the lens of TV’s “The Office.” Another popular video spoofed the world of “High School Musical,” rearranging the upbeat “We’re All in This Together” to “We’re All in Debt Together.”

Liberty President Jerry Falwell and his wife, Becki, are regular attendees at Coffeehouse, showing their support for all the performers and enjoying a special time with students.
