UPDATE: Women’s DI, men’s DII hockey teams fall in finals

It was a heartbreaking night for Liberty University’s ACHA Division I women’s and Division II men’s hockey teams, who had their 15- and 16-game winning streaks ended in the ACHA National Championship finals played at the Ice Haus in downtown Columbus, Ohio.

The Lady Flames (25-8-1) fell by a 4-1 score to Miami University of Ohio, the same team that knocked them out of last year’s semifinal round in overtime and that they defeated for their first national crown in 2015. The RedHawks claimed their third title in four seasons.

Playing in their second straight championship game, the Flames’ DII men dropped a back-and-forth showdown with New York University, 4-3.

Liberty University’s ACHA Division I women’s hockey team concluded its regular season as the hottest team in the nation, winning 16 of its final 17 games and 12 in a row to land the No. 1 seed for this week’s ACHA DI National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

The Lady Flames (22-7-1) open play Wednesday at 8 p.m. in their ninth national tournament in the 11 years since the program started. They will face the University of Minnesota — which upset top-seeded Liberty in the 2013 championship game — at The Chiller in Easton, Ohio. Liberty defeated Miami-Ohio for its first national title in 2015.

Liberty overtook Adrian for the No. 1 spot in the final ACHA DI ranking, released Feb. 26, to set up its first-round matchup with the eighth-seeded Golden Gophers (21-3-3).

If Liberty wins two games against Minnesota, it would advance to play the winner of the series between No. 4 Massachusetts and No. 5 Lindenwood-Belleville in Saturday’s semifinals. (In previous years, the tournament featured two four-team pools with teams playing three games and the top two from each pool advancing to the Final Four.) Semifinal winners will compete for the title in Sunday’s 4 p.m. championship game in the Ice Haus, the practice rink for the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, located adjacent to Nationwide Arena.

Every game in the ACHA National Championships is being streamed live by golivesportscast.com.

Meanwhile, Liberty’s ACHA Division II men’s hockey team will compete in its fourth consecutive national tournament — on the same days as the Lady Flames but at The Chiller in Dublin, Ohio. That 16-team tournament will use pool play to determine the Final Four, with only the top team out of each pool advancing to Saturday’s semifinals. The Flames will open pool play Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. against Keene State College before meeting Lindenwood on Thursday at 11 a.m. and Williston State College on Friday at 7:45 p.m.

Liberty’s ACHA DI men’s team, making its ninth nationals appearance in the 11 seasons it has competed at that level, lost to Colorado State in Thursday’s first round of the 20-team, single-elimination national tournament by a 4-2 final score.
