Liberty University President Jerry Falwell appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Monday night in a segment on religious freedom. He joined the Rev. Franklin Graham in reacting to first lady Melania Trump’s reading of the Lord’s Prayer at a rally in Florida on Saturday.

“It was such a classy thing to do … this is tradition in American history,” Falwell said.

He said the criticism that came afterward was not warranted.

“It’s such a perversion of the idea of separation of church and state — what our founders meant by that — that the judicial activists have created in this century.”

He cited Thomas Jefferson’s efforts to make sure the church never controlled the people the way it had under British rule as the real reason for separation of church and state.

Falwell said his reading of Matthew 6:5-13, which contains the Lord’s Prayer, during the private church service in Washington, D.C., on Inauguration Day was also a longstanding American tradition.
