Students, staff meet with state representatives during VTAG Day

Liberty University students and staff pose with Virginia 23rd District Sen. Steve Newman.

Liberty University students and staff members from the Financial Aid Office traveled to Richmond, Va., on Monday to meet with state legislators for the annual Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) Day.

The group of seven students, who are all from Virginia, talked with representatives from their hometowns about how important VTAG is to students and parents when considering financing their higher education.

VTAG is a state grant that is awarded to residents of Virginia attending a private college or university within the Commonwealth. Students receive grants for $3,200 as undergraduates and $1,600 for graduate students with health profession-related degrees.

Staff and students were able to meet with Delegates C. Matthew Fariss, Scott Garrett, Chris Peace, Margaret Ransone, and Sen. Steve Newman. Afterward, the group attended a senate meeting where they were publicly recognized by Newman and toured the Virginia State Capitol building. The day ended in a high note for student Marlon Pollard, who was offered a summer internship by Del. Peace’s office.

VTAG Day is coordinated by the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) and is part of its yearly VTAG Advocacy Campaign, in which Liberty is a participant in. Approximately 23,000 Virginia residents received assistance for the 2016-17 school year.
