Liberty freshman and NASCAR driver featured in USA Today

Liberty University freshman William Byron, the 18-year-old driver of the Liberty-sponsored No. 9 Toyota Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, was featured in a USA Today Q & A last week.

Soon after moving onto campus as a residential student in late August, he talked with USA Today sports writer Jeff Gluck for the national newspaper’s weekly series of 12-question interviews with NASCAR drivers.

Byron recently signed a development deal with Hendrick Motorsports to race for JR Motorsports in the Xfinity Series next year.

Currently, Byron is the Camping World Trucks Series points leader and has the inside track to rookie of the year with eight top-five showings, including a rookie-record five wins through 15 races this season. The Kyle Busch Motorsports driver placed 10th in Sunday’s Chevrolet Silverado 250 in Ontario, Canada, the only road course race of the season.

Between classes at Liberty, Byron will travel to the Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 16 for the last regular-season race before competing in the Round of 8 of the truck series’ inaugural Chase for the Cup, Sept. 24 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
