African-American History Month events promote fun, dialogue

Liberty University kicked off its African-American History Month celebration Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the DeMoss Hall grand lobby with live jazz music, food, and a historical exhibit. The event, hosted by the Center for Multicultural Enrichment (Center4ME), gave students the opportunity to visit tables that featured a timeline of famous African-Americans throughout U.S. history, as well as notable African-Americans in the history of television.

“While we are one in Christ, we are a diverse student body and celebrate cultural differences,” Melany Pearl, Center4ME director said noting that every month focuses on a different culture (next month is Irish American Heritage Month).

The Center4ME promotes the exploration and celebration of different ethnic groups and cultures throughout the U.S. Through various activities, cultural excursions, and discussions led by experts, the Center4ME helps students from all backgrounds learn how events in culture and history influence people today.

Dominique Nelson, a sophomore studying international relations, said that the kick-off was a tribute to her culture as well as a learning opportunity.

“As an African-American, I am very proud of my culture and all the contributions that African-Americans have made to society,” she said. “It is very important to explore different cultures because at Liberty we are in this position to learn, and through that we can relate better to one another.”

Mimi Ayala, a junior, said that experiencing other cultures is an important part of college life.

“I think it is important that the student body become more aware of different cultures,” she said. “I love that Liberty provides that diversity, and students can learn about how other people have been raised.”

During the month of February, students have the opportunity to celebrate African-American history — including the performing arts and entertainment — in fun, engaging ways.

All events except for the Cultural Excursion trips are open to the public. Visit the Center4ME website for more information about upcoming opportunities or view this month’s event schedule below.
