According to a recent article by Politico, Liberty University was being considered as the front-runner to be the host site for a Republican presidential primary debate sometime in early 2016. Politico reported that the debate was intended to be free from the influence of the mainstream media, giving the public the opportunity to hear about important issues from the candidates in a fresh forum.
The article said over a year of planning took place between the university, the Republican National Committee, and The Washington Times. Politico described behind-the-scenes events that ultimately led to the Liberty-hosted event being shelved.
John Solomon, former editor and vice president for content of The Washington Times (who was the point person for the newspaper throughout the planning), told Politico: “It would have been groundbreaking. It would have been different. It was a missed opportunity, and now we’ll end up with traditional debates.”
