Liberty mourns loss of longtime Board of Trustees member

Joseph Marion Compton

Joseph Marion Compton of Abingdon, Va., a member of the executive committee of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 20. He was 86.

Compton had served on Liberty’s board since 1976. He spent many years on the executive committee.

As the owner of a lumber and milling company, Compton brought his business expertise to the board, helping a young college grow to become the largest Christian university in the world. He and his wife, Jean, were close friends with Liberty’s founder, the late Dr. Jerry Falwell, and Falwell’s wife, Macel. Mr. Compton often flew Falwell in his plane. The Comptons had a home in Lynchburg in the 1970s and ’80s so that Mr. Compton could better assist with the management of Liberty.

The Liberty family sends condolences to the Compton family and will continue to lift them up in prayer during this difficult time.
