LUCOM holds first domestic outreach clinic

A team of student-doctors from the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) hosted the college’s first domestic outreach event in Martinsville, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 24.

A team of student-doctors from the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) hosted the college’s first domestic outreach event in Martinsville, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 24.

When LUCOM opened in 2014, one of its goals was to reach the medically underserved areas of Southern and Southwest Virginia. During Saturday’s six-hour health clinic, student-doctors and physicians did just that as they provided general health screenings for dozens of individuals.

The team specifically focused on obesity and diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, and musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, including the application of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

Several agencies in the region partnered for this outreach event. Students from the Lynchburg College Physician Assistant Medicine program assisted Liberty’s student-doctors and helped with the intake process for patients. Piedmont Access to Health Service helped follow up with patients after their visits.
