Human Resource Society wins statewide competition

Dr. Colleen McLaughlin, center, is the faculty advisor for Liberty’s Society for Human Resource Management. Winning team members are (left to right): Clayton Stoltzfus, Steven Turner, Janelle Crawford, Jerry Wendricks, Blake Godwin and Jordan McLaughlin.

The Liberty University chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) won first and second place in the 2010 SHRM Virginia State HR Games at James Madison University on Saturday, March 20. The team also received the Collegiality Award, given to the team that displays the most positive attitude and character during the competition.

The competition is played using a “Jeopardy” format and includes five rounds, plus one semifinal round and one final round; the semifinals are a single elimination event. LU’s team, which was formed three years ago, has held the first place title and Collegiality Award for two years.

Liberty sent two teams this year, led by faculty advisor Dr. Colleen McLaughlin; the blue team is Jordan McLaughlin, Blake Godwin and Jerry Wendricks, and the red team is Janelle Crawford, Steven Turner and Clayton Stoltzfus.

SHRM is a way for students in Liberty’s School of Business to practice for real-world HR situations and network with professionals in the field. The Spring 2009 semester was the first semester LU offered a specialization in HR Management under the Bachelor of Science in Business degree.

“We are very excited to see what the Lord has in store for students who will enroll in this critical program at LU,” said McLaughlin.

The team is set to compete at the 2010 Southeast Regional SHRM HR Games competition and student conference at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville April 9-10. First place will win $500 for each team member and a free trip to the 62nd Annual National SHRM Conference & Exposition in San Diego, Calif., this summer, where members will be showcased at the opening ceremony and hear from keynote speakers including Al Gore and Steve Forbes.
