Spiritual Emphasis Week kicks off at Liberty

This week Liberty University students are participating in Spiritual Emphasis Week, held at the beginning of each semester to help introduce new students to the fundamentals of Christian life and to help deepen others’ relationships with Jesus Christ. It is a time where students are immersed in powerful messages that encourage deep spiritual growth.

Main speaker Miles McPherson, pastor of the Rock Church in San Diego, Calif., kicked off the week at Wednesday morning’s convocation. He will be continuing with the theme Wednesday and Thursday nights and Friday morning.

During the week, staff from Liberty’s Student Care Office and student leaders in the dorms are available to help with students’ specific needs.

As a former NFL player with the Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers, McPherson experienced his fair share of what the world had to offer him. After years of living an immoral lifestyle filled with drug use, McPherson realized he was empty inside and in 1984 decided to give his life to Christ.

In 1992, he began Miles Ahead Ministries to reach out to youth, and in February 2000 the Rock Church held its first service.

McPherson taught from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, “ Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”

“God did something in your life and what did you do with the comfort that He used to transform you?” McPherson asked students. “Let me tell you something, God didn’t give all that comfort to you just for you. It doesn’t belong to you.”

He used a familiar analogy to explain his message: “You watch football and you see a guy run and get hit by a couple guys ‘BAM!’ very, very, very violent. But, when he gets hit and gets thrown to the ground, he gets up and goes to the huddle and says ‘Give me the ball again.’ With a basketball player, just touch him and he says, ‘I want a free shot.’”

“As believers, has God taken you from where whenever something doesn’t go your way you complain, to a person who deals with it? If that’s your experience then you have a story to tell,” he said.
