June 2013 Employee Newsletter

A Word from Chancellor Falwell

The 2012-13 academic year and the 40th Commencement are weeks behind us now, but I continue to count the blessings God has given Liberty University this year. As our Commencement speaker alumna Shannon Bream said, “Liberty is a place like no other.”

Liberty holds true to its mission of Training Champions for Christ. Nowhere else will you find a world-class university with top-notch academic and athletic programs and an overall student experience that centers on the same Christian mission on which it was founded.

Also, at no other university will you find more dedicated staff members — people committed to helping students meet their academic goals and achieve their dreams.

The numbers show we had 550 faculty members participate in Commencement and another 700 staff members who manned the events throughout the weekend. Many of you wiped off chairs and bleachers, checked in graduates, and welcomed guests all over campus, answering their questions and getting them to where they needed to go. Enrollment staff offered separate receptions for residential and online students and their families. Our Military Affairs Office honored our men and women in uniform with a special ceremony. Our photography and video teams captured the events for history. Our technical productions team streamed the main ceremony live so thousands could watch from home, all around the globe.

Every single one of you played an essential role in that special day, by helping more than 15,000 students reach their goals since the first day when they inquired about enrolling in classes.

Becki and I look forward to the annual senior picnic at our home every year, when we have the chance to hear students tell us their unique experiences, where they have come from and what God has been doing with their lives since they have been here. I wish you could hear all of them. They may not always mention our faculty and staff by name, but I can assure you that you are a part of their success stories.

I am grateful for all the extra hours you have invested in our students’ lives while they made their homes here or studied online with us in their own homes. A diploma is an accomplishment, but the impressions you have left on our students are everlasting. I count you among God’s many blessings at Liberty.

Commencement 2013

Last month, more than 30,000 people — graduates, family, friends, and special guests — arrived on campus to celebrate Liberty University’s 40th Commencement. More than 15,000 new residential and online graduates were sent out to make an impact for Christ in the world and those new graduates now make up part of a network of nearly 200,000 Liberty alumni.

Liberty welcomed one of its own as the keynote speaker for the main Commencement ceremony, Fox News reporter Shannon Bream (’93). Bream is the first Liberty graduate to be the featured speaker since Liberty received accreditation in 1980 and the first-ever female Commencement speaker. During her speech, Bream challenged the new graduates to go forward proclaiming truth and delivering compassion to the world around them. Baccalaureate speaker Dr. Ravi Zacharias also delivered a charge to the graduates during the ceremony.

As part of the ceremony, the 2013 Senior Class left their legacy by presenting a gift of $25,000 to the Liberty Godparent Home. Founded by Jerry Falwell, Sr., the Liberty Godparent home is a ministry for young women dealing with unplanned pregnancies. After the main ceremony, Degree Presentation Ceremonies were held in numerous locations around campus.

The weekend was also filled with a variety of pre-Commencement events to celebrate Liberty’s newest graduates, including a Military Recognition Ceremony as well as resident and online graduate receptions.
