Men's, women's basketball teams win Big South titles, earn NCAA bids

March 10, 2013 : Liberty University Athletics

Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have punched their respective tickets to this year’s big dance, each winning their Big South Conference Championship game on Sunday and claiming automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

This is the second time in conference history that one school has swept the Big South men's and women's basketball titles in the same year, after Liberty accomplished the same feat in 2004.

The Liberty University men's basketball team will put on its dancing shoes for the first time in nine years. Head coach Dale Layer and the No. 5 North seed Flames defeated No. 1 South seed Charleston Southern, 87-76, in the finals of the 2013 Big South Championship, Sunday afternoon at The HTC Center.

The victory, which capped off a remarkable run of four wins in six days, marks Liberty's (15-20) third Big South Championship in program history and the first since 2004

Liberty will now learn its place in the NCAA Tournament bracket, March 17, at 6 p.m. on CBS.

Strong defense and a dominating rebounding performance keyed No. 1 seed Liberty women’s basketball team to its 15th Big South Women's Basketball Championship title, Sunday afternoon at The HTC Center. The Lady Flames posted a +29 rebound margin and held No. 7 seed Longwood to 27.3 percent field goal shooting during their 54-45 victory.

The Lady Flames (27-6) captured their second straight Big South title and 15th crown in the last 17 years just hours after the Liberty men's basketball team also cut down the nets.

The Lady Flames will learn their NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship destination, seed, and first-round opponent on March 18 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
