How to Make Friends as a New Student

October 22, 2008 : Jake Ford

As a new student here at Liberty University it can be very nerve-wracking. What with getting familiar with the campus, figuring out where your classes are, living with new people and getting used to the food. Another thing that you could add to the list is making new friends. That’s definitely one of the biggest things. Here are some tips on how to make new friends as a new student:

1. Get involved.

There are so many opportunities here at LU for you to get involved. Whether it is CampusSERVE, Intramural Sports or getting an on-campus job. All of those are great ways for you to get involved and meet new people

2. Be active with your dorm.

One of the great things about Liberty is how involved dorm leadership is. Not only are there two RA’s (Resident Assistants) on each all, but there are SLD’s (Spiritual Life Directors) and Prayer Leaders. All of these people are there for you. Don’t just sit in your room all day, go visit around the hall and meet the people on your hall. Also, LU pairs up boy and girl dorms, better known as brother/sister dorms. This is a great way for you to meet people of the opposite gender. Because everyone knows – you can’t live with ‘em, but you can’t live without ‘em.

3. Be outgoing.

One thing you’ve got to remember is that you aren’t the only brand new student. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of other new students trying to find their way around campus too. Feel free to talk to people while you’re waiting in line at Jazzman’s or Sub Connection. And don’t be scared of upperclassman. They’re not all as intimidating as they may seem.

Well, there you have it, some great ways to get out and make new friends. Don’t forget that you’re not the only one and remember to get involved, be active and be outgoing!
