For all you artists out there, who think that Lynchburg, VA, is a black hole, void of any artistic creativity, don’t despair. Lynchburg actually has a lot to offer, whether you are an artist yourself or just interested in looking at art.
First of all, there are a few options as far as art supplies go. If you are a casual artist and don’t really need high-end products, I would suggest a craft store like Michael’s or AC Moore’s. Both are close to Liberty and have cheaper, but not as varied or high quality supplies as an art store. If you are going for quality and professionalism, you will need to go downtown Lynchburg. Here you will find the Art Box, a quaint little art store. It has a very welcoming atmosphere and is filled to the brim with all kinds of art supplies. Or, if you happen to be in Roanoke, Southern Graphics and Supply carries everything from drafting tables to canvases. Of course, these stores tend to be expensive, but they offer high quality products.
If you are interested in looking at art, there are numerous galleries in the area for your viewing pleasure. One neat thing Lynchburg offers is First Fridays. On the first Friday of every month, downtown Lynchburg has a free evening of gallery-hopping from 6-8 p.m. There are about 15 local galleries that participate and some have food and live music. Some of the art is a little out there, but other works are quite good. If you want to see high end, professional art, then you won’t want to miss the grand opening of the Taubman Museum of Art. The new state-of-the-art museum will be opening this November and will feature an impressive permanent collection as well as various exhibits throughout the year.
Finally, if you are interested in having your artwork displayed, there are a couple of options. Local gallery and café, The Mezzanine accepts applications for a $20 fee. See the website for guidelines. There is also Liberty University’s own art department which usually puts on a student Art Expedition every year. So let your creative juices flow and take part in some art! There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of.
