New yearbooks delivered at Cinco de Mayo event

Liberty University students took a break from studying for exams to participate in a Cinco de Mayo celebration in front of DeMoss Learning Center on Monday.

The event, sponsored by Liberty’s Selah yearbook staff and Center4ME (Center for Multicultural Enrichment) included free food, party games and live entertainment.

At the event, students had a chance to pick up or order their 2008 “I am” Selah.

Carrie Barnhouse, Selah adviser, said the yearbook is usually released in the summer, but having an edition out before graduation is a plus. More than 400 copies were ordered and they will be available for purchase at Saturday’s commencement for those who did not pre-order copies. DVDs containing the digital pages of the book and student-produced videos of campus happenings are also available for purchase.

This year the Selah staff was nationally recognized for its 2006-2007 edition, winning the Silver Crown in the 2008 Crown Awards program presented annually by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

A staff of about 30 students put together this year’s 232-page book titled “I am.” Graduating senior Leah Williams, a copy editor for Selah, said for this year’s book they asked students what Liberty meant to them and included many images and quotes on this theme. She said the book was titled “I am” because as Liberty students, “We have our own identity with the school, but we also have our own separate identity.”

The goal, said Barnhouse, was to “break out of the box of what everyone expects Liberty to be.”
