Mychelle Cumings was named Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week after winning the ECAC discus title and finishing second in the shot put.

For the second time this season and the fifth time in her career, Liberty sophomore Mychelle Cumings has been named Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Field Athlete of the Week.

Liberty women's throwers have now been tabbed Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week five times during the 2013 outdoor season, as Christina Mitchell, Jennifer Nicholson and Jocelyn Williams have been recognized once each.

On Friday, Cumings became Liberty's first-ever ECAC discus champion, as her winning throw of 165-0 landed more than seven feet past that of her closest rival, Navy's Lauren Allam. Cumings recorded the four longest throws of the competition, also including marks of 158-9, 160-4 and 161-10.

After celebrating her 20th birthday on Saturday, Cumings came back to finish second in the ECAC shot put competition Sunday afternoon. The Tennessee native's longest throw of the day reached a season-best 50-9.5.

Cumings totaled 18 of the Lady Flames' 28 team points at the meet, helping Liberty finish in a tie for ninth place in the ECAC standings.

Cumings is expected to throw both the shot put and discus at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet, slated for May 23-25 at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C. The full list of qualifiers will be announced Thursday afternoon.
