Frazee, Warley Preparing for WNBA Training Camps
Liberty women's basketball alumni Megan Frazee (Class of 2009) and Avery Warley (Class of 2012) will be participating in WNBA training camps in the coming weeks, in preparation for the 2013 season. Frazee was signed to the Phoenix Mercury's training camp roster on Wednesday, following Warley's addition to the Washington Mystics' training camp roster earlier this spring.
Frazee will be looking to make a return to the WNBA after averaging 4.7 ppg during two seasons (2009-10) with the San Antonio Silver Stars. The No. 14 pick of the 2009 WNBA Draft is coming off of a successful 2012-13 season with Samsun Basketbol in the Turkish Women's Basketball League. She ranked second in the league with 18.7 ppg and also collected 7.4 rpg.
Expectations are high for the Mercury in 2013, following an injury-plagued 7-27 campaign a year ago. Phoenix selected Brittney Griner with the No. 1 pick of the WNBA Draft, adding her to a roster that already includes Diana Taurasi, DeWanna Bonner, Samantha Prahalis and Penny Taylor.
Phoenix's training camp will begin on May 6, and the training camp roster will be trimmed from 15 to 11 players before the May 27 season opener against the Chicago Sky.
Frazee's former Lady Flames teammate, Warley will have a chance to play in her hometown of Washington, D.C., after spending her rookie season with Phoenix in 2012. She averaged 3.1 ppg and 5.7 rpg after improbably making the 2012 Mercury roster as an undrafted free agent.
Like Frazee, Warley played overseas during the offseason, helping Elitzur Holon reach the semifinals of the Israeli league playoffs. For the 2012-13 season, Warley posted 17.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg while shooting 67.1 percent from the field.
Washington's 2013 roster is highlighted by veterans Matee Ajavon, Monique Currie and Crystal Langhorne. The Mystics also selected Ohio State guard Tayler Hill with the fourth overall pick of the WNBA Draft.
Like Phoenix, Washington will cut its training camp roster down to 11 players in time for the season opener. The Mystics' 2013 campaign will tip off on May 27 at Tulsa.
If Frazee and Warley both make their respective teams' rosters, they will get the chance to face each other twice in seven days. Washington will play at Phoenix on June 21 at 10 p.m., before the Mercury head to the nation's capital on June 27 at 7 p.m.
