Coastal Carolina Defeats Liberty

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers led from start to finish, en route to a 12-1 victory over the Liberty Flames in a Big South Conference contest at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, Monday afternoon.

Liberty falls to 6-6 in Big South play and 17-15 overall. The Flames have lost four straight games. Coastal Carolina moves to 7-2 in conference action and 20-12 overall.

Just like in the first two games of the series, Coastal Carolina jumped out to an early advantage in the contest's opening inning. Designated hitter Ted Blackman led off the home half of the first with a triple, which bounded over Liberty right fielder Ashton Perritt's glove and rolled to the right field wall. Center fielder Jacob May followed with a run-scoring single to left field, giving the Chanticleers a 1-0 edge. Later in the inning, second baseman Justin Creel walked with the bases loaded, forcing in a run for a 2-0 advantage.

After a pitching change for the Flames, back-to-back RBI singles by first base Tyler Chadwick and third baseman Zach Remillard made it 4-0, Chanticleers.  Two wild pitches by Liberty reliever Josh Richardson allowed two more runs to score for a 6-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina added to its advantage with a run in the second. May walked to begin the frame and two batters later, scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Will Remillard.

The Chanticleers extended their lead with three runs in the fourth. Two-out singles by right fielder Colin Herring and Creel stretched the home team's advantage. A wild pitch by Flames reliever Blake Fulghum with the bases loaded, allowed another run for a 10-0 host lead.

Liberty got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Perritt led off the inning by legging out an infield single. Second baseman Bryan Aanderud followed with a single, moving Perritt to third. Perritt then scored on a double play grounder by catcher Trey Wimmer, making it, 10-1.

In the bottom of the inning, Coastal Carolina added two more runs, plating runs on a bases-loaded walk and fielder's choice ground out for what proved to be the final score of 12-1.

Liberty starter Trey Lambert falls to 5-2 on the season. The first of eight Flames to pitch in the contest, Lambert gave up five runs on three hits over 1/3 innings. He walked two batters.

Coastal Carolina right-hander Alex Cunningham moves to 2-1. He allowed one hit over five scoreless innings. He struck out four batters and walked two.   

Liberty recorded five hits in the contest. Coastal Carolina collected 13 hits. Four Chanticleers had two hits apiece in the game.

The Flames return home for a contest with the James Madison Dukes, tomorrow. First pitch at the Liberty Baseball Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
