Lady Flames Conclude Home Schedule This Weekend

The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team hosts its final two matches of the 2013 season this weekend, beginning on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Marshall. On Sunday, Liberty will wrap up its home slate against Charleston Southern at 1 p.m., in its final Big South match of the year.

The Lady Flames have won eight out of their last 10 contests to improve to 10-7 (6-2 Big South) on the year. Liberty's 6-2 conference mark currently has them in fourth place. On Tuesday, Liberty travelled to James Madison and edged the Dukes, 4-3, running its winning streak to four matches. The Lady Flames' one-point defeat of James Madison marked their fifth 4-3 victory of the season. Overall, Liberty is 5-2 in matches decided by just one point.

Nicola Wellman and Valerie Thong are both riding four-match winning streaks in singles matches and pace the Lady Flames with 11 and nine victories, respectively. In their last 19 contests combined, Wellman and Thong are a collective 16-3. Rebekah Jenkins, who was recently named the Big South Conference Player of the Week, is third on the squad with eight singles tallies. Overall, Liberty is 48-45 in singles tilts, including a 28-20 mark in conference action.

In doubles play, two Lady Flames tandems have reached the double-digit win plateau on the year. Brittany Yang and Jessie Boda have posted a team-best 13-3 record on the season, while Thong and Cameron Richard are 10-5. As a team, Liberty is 17-7 in Big South doubles tilts and 31-18 overall. 

Marshall comes to the Hill City with a 9-9 (1-1 C-USA) overall mark. The Thundering Herd is 2-2 in road contests this spring. Marshall is 46-57 as a squad in singles matches and 26-24 in doubles contests. Karlyn Timko has a team-leading 13 singles wins, with 10 of those victories coming in the No. 6 position. In the No. 1 spot, Dominika Zaprazna is 6-12. Timko and Dana Oppinger's 10 doubles wins tops the Thundering Herd. The No. 1 tandem of Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova is second on the team with eight victories.

Charleston Southern enters Sunday's contest with a 9-5 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in the Big South, which is good for second place in the conference. The Buccaneers fell to first place Winthrop, 4-3, this past Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the league.

Charleston Southern's No. 1 singles player Marketa Placha has a 9-5 mark, while Yvonne Hubler is 7-2, in the No. 2 position. The Buccaneers are a combined 48-36 (27-19 Big South) in singles matches during the spring campaign. In doubles competition, the combination of Hubler and Alexandra Walters is a team-best 8-1, with seven of those victories coming in the No. 2 slot. Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko, Charleston Southern's No. 1 tandem, is 6-7 on the year. The Buccaneers have only lost three times in 18 Big South doubles matches and have an overall team record of 22-20.

After Sunday's match, Liberty will conclude its regular season on Tuesday at Richmond. The contest against the Spiders is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
