Wireless Internet at Liberty University

  • How do I connect to the network?
    1. Connect to Liberty-Wireless
    2. Open your web browser and navigate to onboard.liberty.edu
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Where does Liberty University have wireless coverage?
All residence halls and academic spaces feature 100% wireless coverage. Wireless coverage is also available in some outdoor areas but isn’t guaranteed. We are evaluating further coverage in outdoor locations, as this has been a big request from students for the past few years.
  • What type of wireless card do you recommend?
We recommend using Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 6 support computers or a computer manufactured in the last four years that features these technologies. It will not be supported if you only have an 802.11 bg or bgn only capable device. However, we still allow game systems and IoT devices to connect via “Liberty-Wireless” using Wi-Fi 3 & 4.
  • Why is Liberty an all-Wi-Fi-based Campus?
We strive to provide the best Wireless for our Students, Staff, Faculty, and guests. We have gone from just over 1200 access points in the last ten years to over 5000+  access points across campus. We have removed our legacy bandwidth caps and now provide speeds up to 120mbps over our wireless network and, in some cases, faster speeds where we have the newer technologies enabled. We average speeds between 60-120 Mbps daily during heavy-use times, depending on the capacity in these heavy-use windows.
  • How is Liberty improving the wireless network?
Over the summer months, we have begun rolling out the next generation across campus: Wi-Fi 6E. We will deploy over 1600 Access Points to replace our legacy 802.11ac/Wi-Fi5 access points. We will also complete enhancements to Campus East Dorms, South Campus Quads, South Dorms, and Hill Dorms. The team is currently evaluating the latest generation of access points and working to improve security and onboarding across the network for our users.
  • What if my computer gets a poor signal on the wireless network?
Our HelpDesk would be happy to help you resolve any outstanding issues to ensure that your computer can receive the highest quality signal. Typically issues that students have on the wireless network are caused by outdated drivers for their wireless card or misconfigured wireless settings. Our technicians continually monitor our wireless network, and if we receive multiple reports of poor performance, we will dispatch network engineers and technicians to investigate.

If you’re experiencing technical difficulties with the Liberty wi-fi or need help onboarding your device, submit a ticket.

Information Technology works hard to implement a campus-wide wireless network. This network allows you to access the Internet and other network resources while in range of one of our many wireless access points.
