Major E-Mail and Storage Upgrades for all Students and Alumni!

Liberty University Information Services (LUIS) is pleased to announce that it has engaged in creating a deeper partnership with Microsoft Corporation in order to offer new products and services to students and alumni as well as to enhance existing services.

Beginning summer 2009, LUIS will be migrating student and alumni e-mail boxes to servers hosted by Microsoft on their Outlook Live platform. This change will provide students with a 125-fold increase in e-mail storage to 10 Gigabytes (GB) and will offer numerous enhancements in the user webmail interface where you navigate through your e-mails in your web browser, including the ability to rapidly search through your mailbox. In addition, the old student “molly” drives will be replaced by Microsoft’s SkyDrive which offers a whopping 25GB of storage space for each student/alumni and is accessible “In the Clouds” via the internet from anywhere in the world (instead of having to be on campus).

Also, don’t worry about your data because we already checked to ensure that Microsoft has a robust data security, redundancy (immediate backup in case of failure), and disaster recovery plan in place. All of your e-mails and files sent between your mailbox and LU over the internet will be encrypted (protected with a special security “key”) to prevent any intrusions. In fact, your data will even be stored in multiple geographic locations so that even a natural disaster can’t touch your information!

This change will have minimal intrusive impact on students and alumni, and both will retain exclusive Liberty e-mail addresses. Faculty and staff mailboxes will remain hosted by LUIS and will be unaffected by this change.

More information regarding this exciting upgrade will be provided as LUIS continues to work through the summer to bring these services to students before the Fall 2009 semester. Please stay tuned throughout the summer and be sure to check your LU e-mail and the IT Helpdesk website (www.liberty.edu/helpdesk) for important announcements and details regarding this upgrade.

See you in the fall!
