2016-2017 CSER Student Volunteer Award Recipient

Namthu Nguyen

The Center for Christian/Community Service (CSER) awarded Liberty University Senior Namthu Nguyen the CSER Volunteer of the Year Award for 2016-2017. The award is presented annually to a student whose work demonstrates Liberty University's mission to serve others and glorify God within the community. Nguyen was recognized for the work he has done at Amherst County High School.

Nguyen volunteered with the organization, Young Life, from Fall 2012 until Spring 2017. His supervisor, Allen Miller, nominated Nguyen for the award because of the dedication and connection with the students.

Nguyen always found time to volunteer for the students. He attended dozens of student activities and continued to volunteer even during the summer months. In one of his last trips with Young Life he took several teens to the Young Life Summer Camp at Rockbridge.  His commitment to the students earned him an elevated role within Young Life.

"Namthu was a well-respected teammate and became a much-appreciated team leader." said Miller. "His team built deliberate and impactful relationships with the teens at the school."

Liberty students are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of Christian service each semester before they receive their diploma, but many students, like Nguyen, go beyond expectation.

Miller attributed Nguyen with over 1200 hours of Chrisitan service with them over his 5 years at Liberty University.

As well as being a proven leader in volunteer work, Nguyen also excelled in the classroom becoming a top designer for Liberty University's spring fashion shows.
