Opportunity House is a community-based residential program for at-risk, male adolescents. Our mission is to offer youth and their families, solutions for life challenges by providing tools to build a better tomorrow. As a result of this mission, we view the youth as “students of life” and the staff and volunteers are the “teachers of life.”
Volunteers, working in a number of roles under the supervision of trained staff, can make a difference in the lives of our youth.
Counseling practicum or internships can include not only individual and group work, but also, family counseling
Tutoring or helping students with homework (research clearly shows that the further that one goes in school the less likely one is to penetrate the justice system.)
Recreation leader (may include a number of activities ranging from jogging, hiking, fishing to group activities such as basketball).
Arts and crafts facilitator
Multi-cultural events coordinator
Special group leader, e.g., Bible study
In addition to the roles where the volunteer works with the youth, volunteers can help behind the scenes by:
Helping develop training PowerPoint’s or videos
Painting or light maintenance
Special cleaning, e.g., waxing floors
Other special support projects—landscaping
