Educational Experience

Prior to arriving at Liberty, Dr. James Reese has served as an associate professor in the Sport Management Department at SUNY Cortland in central New York. He served as graduate coordinator from the launch of the program in the fall of 2006 until January of 2010. The SUNY Cortland graduate program began with 13 students and one degree option. In less than four years it grew to include almost 150 students and four Master of Science program options including a full-time residential program, a full-time residential international program, a part-time online program and a full-time dual diploma option with London Metropolitan University. In 2008, Sport Management students selected Reese as the recipient of the SUNY Cortland Sport Management Department Excellence in Teaching Award. In the spring of 2009, Reese was selected to be part of the leadership team that negotiated and helped secure the New York Jets training camp at SUNY Cortland.

Prior to arriving at SUNY Cortland, Reese was a member of the Division of Sports Administration at Ohio University and coordinated the undergraduate Sport Management program. Under his leadership, the Sport Management program established a partnership with the Sales Centre in the College of Business to create a Sport Management specific Sales Certificate program, at the time, one of the few programs of its kind in the nation. Reese was also instrumental in the creation of a corporate ticketing partnership with TicketReturn, a ticketing software company prominent in college athletics and Minor League Baseball.

Reese's research interests include ticket operations and ticket sales, sponsorship sales and activation, college athletic reform and internships in sport.

Sport Industry Experience

Reese has a wealth of sport industry experience. He served as the Vice President of IFSA/USA (International Federation of Strength Athletes), the United States governing body for the sport of professional strongman from July 2002 until November 2003. In 2004 and 2005, he worked as a sponsorship consultant for Curb-Agajanian Performance Group, a NASCAR Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series race team. Reese also served as a ticketing administrator with the Denver Broncos from 1996-1999 where he was involved in the ticket planning and execution of Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII and earned two Super Bowl rings. While in an intercollegiate environment, he worked as an assistant tennis coach and facility management assistant in the athletics departments at Georgia Southern University (1994-1996) and the University of Northern Colorado (1996-1998). While at Georgia Southern, Reese also served as a sales assistant and personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Statesboro, Ga.

Since leaving the NFL in 1999, Reese has been involved in numerous consulting/educational based projects (www.reesesports.com) in the areas of leadership (IFSA/USA), event management (IFSA/USA; Ohio Valley Strongman), sponsorship sales (IFSA/USA; Curb-Agajanian Performance Group), ticket operations training (University of Nebraska at Omaha) and ticket sales (Turnstyles Ticketing/United Football League; Ohio University Athletics, SUNY Cortland Athletics and the SUNY Youth Sports Institute).

Personal

Reese earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Business/Economics, a Master of Science degree from Georgia Southern University in Sport Management and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Sport Administration.

While in college, Reese was a two-sport athlete in baseball (co-captain) and track. Since then, he has sport-related work experience in college and professional sports in the areas of ticket operations, sales, marketing, sponsorship and facility and event management.

Reese was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and grew up in Plainfield, N.J., until the age of 13. His family then moved to the Minersville, Pa., area where his extended family still resides. Reese and his family, wife Candace and son Nathan, currently live in Madison Heights, Va., and attend Temple Baptist Church.

Personal Statement and Favorite Scripture Verses

"I've always told people that I have the best job in the world since I get paid to stand in front of people and talk about sports and build lifelong relationships with students. Now I get to do those same things at a Christian institution. I feel privileged and blessed to be part of the Liberty University family of faculty, staff and administrators. I look forward to doing everything I can to assist students in their spiritual, mental and emotional development as they transition from higher education to careers in sport."

Favorite Scripture Verses:

  • "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4:13 KJV).
  • "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11 KJV).
  • "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20 KJV).
