The Liberty University Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program prepares nurses for advanced practice as Clinical Nurse Specialists or as Nurse Educators. The program is approved by the Virginia State Council of Higher Education and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Liberty’s 36-credit-hour MSN program, based on the curriculum guidelines set forth by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, offers two tracks: Adult/Acute Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Nurse Educator. The MSN clinical and education-focused practicum experiences are tailored to meet the individual interests and learning needs of each student. With the guidance of faculty mentors and approved preceptors, students develop practicum experiences based on their specialty areas of practice within either the clinical or educational setting.

Graduates possess the critical thinking skills and knowledge needed to promote the profession of nursing through advanced clinical practice, teaching, research, and scholarship. Adult/Acute CNS graduates may be eligible to take the *Adult Health CNS certification exam offered by American Nurses Credentialing Center [ANCC].

Prior to enrollment in Liberty University's MSN Online program, potential students are encouraged to research their respective State Boards of Nursing for information about clinical nurse specialist practice and certification relevant to the nurse practice act and requirements for certification. Prospective students should also contact their state’s Department of Education or Board of Nursing to verify access to practicum sites while enrolled in an out-of-state online program [some states may reserve clinical sites for in-state residential students]. Most MSN courses are offered in an 8-week format year-round. The Adult/Acute CNS and Nurse Educator track courses are 16 weeks in length. There is no residency requirement for the online MSN program.

* Note that periodic changes made in eligibility requirements by the American Nurses Credentialing Center body are beyond the control of any academic institution. The American Nurses Credentialing Center makes the final determination regarding CNS exam eligibility.

Purpose & Mission

All courses are taught from a Christian worldview perspective.

The MSN Program is consistent with the University’s mission statement, “To produce Christ-centered men and women with values, knowledge, and skills required to impact tomorrow’s world,” and the aim of Liberty University to provide students with “encouragement in choosing and following their vocation as a calling to do the will of God throughout all of life” (see University Mission Statement, Graduate Catalog).
