Wednesday, June 29, 2016 What Should I Expect?

"The Writing Center sounds daunting . . .  Plus, who works in a place where they want to read other people’s papers. Who are these people? I have so many mistakes and I don’t really know what I’m doing, so I don’t really think they can help me."

Don’t think this way! We are friendly faces and students just like you. We enjoy helping people. Our goal is to help you with anything you need, including grammar, organization, theses, and formatting. We want you to feel confident in all these areas, especially in the area that you come to us for help with. But that’s the end goal; let’s talk about what you should expect when you come to the writing center.

  • First of all, show up! Our waiting room consists of some coaches plus our administrative assistant. When you walk in, let her know you have an appointment with the writing center and she will let your coach know that you are here. If you didn’t set up an appointment, the administrative assistant will send the first available coach to help you.
  • A coach will take you to our classroom. We get a lot of coaching sessions during the day, so the classroom will probably have other people in it as well.
  • We’ll do our best to look at your paper, ask what you want to work through, and work through it as much as you want to. A typical appointment lasts 30 minutes.

It’s a really simple process, but it can make a world of difference.

Most students who visit us report receiving a higher grade on their paper than they think they would have earned otherwise.  They also feel more confident in their writing. Don’t freak out about coming to see us; we just want to help you!
