Monday, February 4, 2013 Back in the Stands

Last fall, I became involved in video production for many of Liberty’s athletic events. I’ve had a great time working in the atmospheres of college soccer, football, field hockey and basketball, but I recently enjoyed watching a game from the stands for the first time since August.

I met up with my old roommates and cheered on my Liberty Flames as they took on the Campbell Fighting Camels in basketball.

The game started out slow, but Liberty managed to get a small lead on Campbell by halftime. In the second half, the Fighting Camels made a small run, but Liberty came charging back.

Tavares Speaks, Davon Marshall, and JC Sanders made three-point-shooting look easy, but Liberty didn't only look strong from behind the arch. Andrew Smith and the Flames put on a dunk clinic.  For one of his dunks, Smith caught a pass in mid-air and slammed it down. Later in the game, Liberty hustled after a loose ball, and JR Coronado slammed down another dunk on the fast break.

Smith also blocked a shot and sprinted to the other end of the court to slam down a pass from his teammate. Everyone in the Vines Center loved the play and ESPN did too. In fact, Smith’s play was so incredible that it played on Sports Center's Top 10!

With great plays on defense and offense, Liberty pulled away from Campbell and won a decisive victory with a final score of 89-72. The Fighting Camels should have stayed in the desert, because, according to, they have never won a game in the Vines Center.

According to, Speaks posted a career-high 22 points!

I have seen the majority of Liberty’s home basketball games this season, and this game was definitely the most entertaining and dominating performance I've seen yet! Games, like the one I saw Tuesday night, don’t come every day, and I enjoyed being back in the stands to watch my Flames dominate on the court.

Watch the highlights of Liberty's dominating performance below!
