Friday, December 7, 2012 Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

I don’t know about you guys, but for as long as I can remember, my family has put a Christmas tree up in our home to celebrate the Christmas season. We always get a real tree, and the process of picking it out has become a sort of family tradition. One year I remember getting this huuuge tree. It was so tall and fat that there was hardly any room to walk around it.

Well. Let me tell you, that tree pales in comparison to the tree at Thomas Road Baptist Church’s annual Christmas program, the Virginia Christmas Spectacular. This tree stands 37 feet tall. No lie. It also has over 150,000 lights on it. Pretty crazy, huh? Another cool thing about this tree is that it has people in it! Say whaaa…?

Okay, okay, so it’s a fake tree and people sit in it and sing these awesome songs while all the lights flash in time to the music, and on stage the Christmas story is told in the form of a play! This is the 42nd year that TRBC has put on this massive production. Every year it is a different story that incorporates the Gospel, and every year it is a huge success.

The cool thing about this year’s show is that it's actually based on a true story! Back in 1987, a girl named Virginia sent her own letter to the editor of the New York Sun asking for the truth about Santa Claus, and the response became the most reprinted newspaper editorial in history. Adapted for Thomas Road's stage and inspired by Disney's Newsies, the 42nd Virginia Christmas Spectacular is about a girl who submits a letter to the local paper, The Chicago Sun, asking them to please print the real Christmas story. She hopes that if people read the story of Jesus they will believe in God because, “If it says it in the Sun, it must be so!” As the journalist seeks out the who, what, when, where, and why of the story behind the letter, and coincidentally the true Christmas story, the audience has a chance to hear the Gospel as well.

To see videos from previous years' performances, you can check out Red Tie Music's YouTube channel. But while the videos are cool, this is definitely something you'll want to see in person. I’ve gone to the Virginia Christmas Spectacular every year I’ve been at Liberty, and it has never been anything less than, well, spectacular! :)
