Liberty Athletics Excel in the NCAA at Division I Level

In its brief 40-year history, Liberty University has achieved meteoric success in the world of college athletics. For example, our women’s basketball team has won 10 of the last 11 Big South Championships and made the Sweet 16 in 2005.

Liberty’s athletes are dedicated to success, not just in terms of producing winning seasons and achieving individual accomplishments, but in utilizing their athletic skills to further the Gospel. Following games, Liberty athletes can typically be seen praying with their opponents and telling them what Christ has done in their lives.

Many Liberty athletes who have progressed into the world of professional sports have maintained this firm commitment to using their high profile as a tool of sharing their faith. These athletes include former Atlanta Braves first baseman Sid Bream, former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Randy Tomlin, former New York Yankees relief ace Lee Guetterman, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Kelvin Edwards, former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver James McKnight, current Detroit Shock center Katie Feenstra, current Jacksonville Jaguars running back Rashad Jennings and current Houston Texans running back Samkon Gado, to name just a few.

Liberty University is the home of the 10,000-seat Vines Center, our beautiful indoor athletic and special events arena that has been nicknamed “The Furnace,” so named because of the intense heat our fans put on opponents. Liberty students are truly hard-core sports fans. Liberty also features the 19,200-seat Williams Football Stadium, the Schilling Multi-Purpose Center, Al Worthington Baseball Stadium and many other sports complexes. The 60,000 square-foot Football Operations Center sits in the north end zone at Williams Stadium and has set standards that are atop of major college athletics. Amenities include a 20,000 square-foot weight facility, offices, donor room and a top-flight sports medicine facility.

In addition to intercollegiate athletics, a large variety of intramural athletic programs are available to students.
