International Students

Eligibility: Social Security Numbers are issued for employment purposes only. 

Requirements for F-1 Students

  • In the U.S. for at least 10 days
  • Enrolled full time in classes
  • Have a confirmed JOB OFFER. The job must begin within 2 weeks of applying for a Social Security Number.

Obtaining your Social Security Card

First Steps

  • After you have a job offer confirmed, go to the Human Resources Office at Green Hall to obtain a Social Security application letter. This letter must be signed by your employer and by a Human Resources Office staff member.
  • After you have obtained your letter from Human Resources go to the International Student Center to get a signed letter from your Foreign Student Advisor.

How to Apply

Bring the following items to the Social Security Office.

  • Passport
  • Form I-20
  • Form I-94
  • Liberty Student ID (LibertyOne) Card
  • Birth Certificate (This is required if your passport is less than a year old.)
  • Letter verifying offer of a job, signed by both the employer and the Human Resources Office.
  • Letter from the International Student Center signed by the Designated School Official.
  • Proof of residency in Lynchburg. This could be a piece of mail that has been sent to you at your CURRENT ADDRESS (Liberty or local).
    • Make sure you use a complete address when you apply, with a box# or apartment#. EXAMPLE: Sue Smith, 1971 University Blvd #12345, Lynchburg, VA 24506.
    • You can use a bank statement, cell phone bill, or a transcript that lists your local or Liberty address. Personal letters, computer print outs, or "junk mail" like magazines will not be accepted.

After you receive your card take it to:

  • Human Resources
  • Registrar's Office

*Please note that F-2 visa holders are not eligible for Social Security Numbers.
