ROTC (the abbreviation for Reserve Officer's Training Corp) is a college course that is designed to develop confident, competent, and adaptive leaders with the basic military science and leadership foundation necessary not only to lead small units but also to evolve into the Army's future senior leaders. ROTC is divided into two courses, the Basic Course (freshman and sophomore years of college), which does not incur a military obligation but whose credits can be used toward a degree, and the Advanced Course (junior and senior years of college), which does incur a military obligation.
As an Officer in the U.S. Army, you'll have the unique opportunity to start your career as a leader. To achieve the honor of Officership, you must possess strong leadership qualities along with the desire to improve yourself and your country. Army Officers are expected to live according to a strict code of conduct. This code involves making a commitment to the well-being of the country, includes both written rules and traditions and requires a sworn oath. The challenges and rewards are abundant. You'll work within one of 17 branches, specializing in a general field of interest, taking on different assignments every few years. The Army offers the chance to concentrate in one branch while expanding your specialization as your career progresses. Much of your work will be in different parts of the country or the world and your job assignment and location could change several times. Each new assignment brings with it new challenges, new locations and the chance to advance your career, education and experience.
First, decide what level of commitment you are at right now. Do you want to experience ROTC training for a semester or two to find out how much time and study you will need to expend in order to maintain a good grade? If so, you can enroll in the basic course with no obligation to serving in the Army. If you are a freshman at Liberty, you would enroll in MISC 101-001 and MISC 001-001. If you are a sophomore, you would enroll in MISC 201-001 and MISC 001-001. If you eventually decide becoming an Army Officer is not for you, your time won't be wasted because these classes can be used as electives for your degree.
