Important Note

  • All approval documents must be submitted to the Ph.D. Practicum Office through the SharePoint submission portal prior to the deadline listed above. No late documents will be accepted without the permission of the Director of Clinical Training. Submission of the below forms does not mean automatic acceptance of the proposed site and/or supervisor; they must be approved first. Liberty University must validate that the student's proposed site will provide a good educational experience and that it has adequate oversight and safeguards built in to ensure an appropriate clinical environment.

Program Policies 

  • The official start date for the Ph.D. Practicum is the first official day of the academic semester.
  • The Practicum course offered is an A-Term course and is a full-semester commitment. Students will remain with their Practicum site and supervisor for the duration of the academic semester. Students must complete all Practicum hours and requirements within one academic semester. The course is 17 weeks in Fall and Spring semesters and 15 weeks in Summer.
  • Students must complete a Background Check or Re-Check through Castle Branch as part of Practicum application. Please visit the Background Check website for further instructions.

Application Process

Requirements and Preparation

  • Must have 3.0 cumulative GPA or above by the posted application deadline
  • Complete Prerequisites: COUC 715, 730, 740, 745, and 969 (Qualifying Exam)
    • All prerequisite courses are non-negotiable and must be successfully completed prior to the start of the Practicum.
  • Find a Practicum site and supervisor
  • Due to the potential time required in locating a site and supervisor, students are encouraged to begin looking for a site and supervisor three to four months prior to the application submission deadline set by the Practicum/Internship Office.
  • Submit all the required approval paperwork through the online submission portal by the application deadline.
  • After your documents have been approved, you will receive an official approval email with your approved start date for earning hours. Upon approval, the Ph.D. Practicum Office will manually register you for the course.
    • Students will submit two different time preferences for WebEx Faculty Group Supervision. This is an initial inquiry as to time availability. Our office cannot guarantee a specific day and time WebEx Faculty Group Supervision. Class will be held on a mutually agreeable time as determined by the professor.

Practicum Application Process

  • Degree Completion Plan Audit (Located under Student Tab in ASIST)
  • Castle Branch Background Check Receipt (Background check and FBI fingerprinting)
  • Supervisor's License Verification (Found on your state counseling board website; includes name, license number, issue date, expiration date, & current/active)
  • Fieldwork Contract (signed by the supervisor & student)
    • Note: The informed consent and how the site maintains records will need to be submitted with a copy of the Fieldwork Contract for potential school/church sites.
  • Supervisor & Site Information Forms (signed by the site director, the supervisor, & student)
  • On-Site Supervisor: an individual who is an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Practicum at.
  • Off-Site Supervisor: an individual who is not an employed counselor at the site you are applying to complete your Practicum at, but has received approval to come on site and provide supervision.
  • Digital Photo of Student (Professional Photo, Driver's License, or Student ID ONLY)
  • Copy of Student Liability Insurance Face Sheet
  • Please note: our office does not accept electronic signatures on approval documents at this time.
  • Affiliation Agreement (signed by site and student)
    • Have the appropriate person at your site fill out and sign this document and submit it with your application.
  • How to complete the Affiliation Agreement
    • This document is for instructional purposes only. This may not be used as the submission document.
  • Note: Student needs to submit completed Liberty University Affiliation Agreements or an Affiliation Agreement that is approved by Liberty University. Extensions will not be granted for Affiliation Agreement negotiations.

Minimum Practicum Hours 100:

  • Direct Client Contact: 40 hours minimum
  • Individual Supervision Hours: One hour per week (10 hours minimum) 
  • Faculty Group Supervision: 1.5 hours per week

Changing/Adding Your Internship Site/Supervisor During a Semester

Students are allowed to switch sites/supervisors, add an additional site/supervisor, or drop a site/supervisor during their Internship experience. 

Students must follow the procedures laid out in Professional Counseling Site and Supervisor Change Procedures.

Disclaimer: If there is a change in the Site Director that is listed on the Site Information Form, our office will only need an updated Site Information Form with the new individual’s name and title. You will need to submit the updated Site Information Form via email to phdpracticum@liberty.edu.


Practicum Sites

Below is a list of the types of sites that can typically be approved for practicum fieldwork:

  • Counseling agency
  • Hospital
  • Private practice
  • University counseling center
  • Community services board
  • School*
  • Church**

*A potential school site must provide mental health services to elementary, middle, and/or high school-aged students. The site must use approved informed consent and maintain records of counseling sessions.

**A potential church site must be an established church counseling center/services that uses approved informed consent and maintains client records of counseling sessions.


Approved Supervisors for Ph.D. Practicum

Examples of Approved Supervisors

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision (from an accredited university)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Psychologist (LP) – a Psychologist with a doctoral degree in Psychology (Psy. D.)
  • Psychiatrist

Examples of Supervisors Not Approved

  • Doctorate degrees that are not in the counseling field or are unaccredited
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) 
  • Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC)
  • Master of Divinity
  • Pastoral Counselors
  • School Counselors
  • Supervisors who are not licensed in the same state as the practicum site.
